About Me

I was born on Dec. 2, 1980 in Shanghai, China and moved to the USA in August of 1992. I started sixth grade at Columbian Elementary School in Omaha, NE. After that, I went to Beveridge Junior High and then Millard North High School (graduated in May 1999). Currently, I am a graduate student at University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (UIUC) pursuing a Ph.D. degree in Computer Science. I graduated from UIUC with a B.S. in Computer Science and a minor in Mathematics in May 2002. I also obtained a M.S. in Computer Science from UIUC in May 2004.

Research Interests

My field of research is data mining. Specifically, I am pursuing problems and solutions in moving-object and spatiotemporal data mining. Due to the dynamic granularities and temporal issues involved, these types of problems have been largely unexplored in data mining. I also have interests in data warehousing, RFID data analysis, text mining, social network analysis, machine learning, and theoretical AI.

Other Interests

In my spare time, I like to listen to music, watch TV (with my TiVo) and movies. In fact, I like music so much that it has lead me to start several websites and a record label. See the music section for details. Some of my favorite shows include Seinfeld, PTI, Arrested Development, Scrubs, The Office, Family Guy, Kids in the Hall, News Radio (why is that not syndicated anymore!), Sopranos, Sealab 2021, Harvey Birdman, and Conan O'Brien. For movies, I'm mostly into indie and Azn movies. Some recent ones I've seen and liked include Me and You and Everyone We Know, Junebug, Broken Flowers, Syriana, Palindromes, Grizzly Man. Directors I enjoy include David Lynch, Takashi Miike, Hitchcock, Jarmusch, etc. Some other stuff I'm into are photography, wine, video games and going to the gym.
